I am a huge fan in finding out that life as I know it is a huge absolute fucking lie, because it completely explains why life didn't make sense when I was a kid, and why it still doesn't make sense almost 30 years later.
At the begining of the 20th century, anyone who questioned or critiqed the still-emerging government were labeled communists, regardless of wether or not they even held communist beliefs. Then came the hippies- groups of college students mostly, who, with their eyes opened by education, became increasingly active and voiced their disgust with our government, mainly for entering into the illegal war in Vietnam. Now comes the label of consipiracy theorists -people who have the advantage of being able to look back over the last hundred years, connect the dots, and paint a more accurate picture of our country's history and its effect on our present situation.
The problem with these labels is being associated with them. Communists were tried as traitors to the country, hippies were branded as directionless losers, and conspiracy theorists are both- directionless losers with treason on the brain who suffer from irrational fears and paranoia. No matter what the label, if you've got a viewpoint that is not shared by the masses and is not broadcast on ABC, you can bet that most folks will fight you to the death if your views threaten their comfort.

I am a child of the early eighties, part of a generation of Americans raised almost entirely on television, and as such, most of who I am- my fears, my loves, and my hopes for the future are, strangely enough, rooted in old TV shows.
